Although it exists in a three-dimensional space, I consider my neon sculpture to be drawing in light. The work integrates neon figures with elements of classical and post-modern architecture, such as friezes, pediments and columns. The figures are gestural and metaphorical forms expressive of human feelings. Animate, ascendant, breaking boundaries, they affirm existence and the possibility of transformation and transcendence.
In recent neon work, the figures have become larger and more gender-specific. Although a theme of liberation from architectural constraints is still present, newer work is more concerned with relationship and intimacy. In work such as Rise and Shine, figures and words interact. Scrimscreen works, such as Scrimscreen Caryatid, combine neon and drawing: the viewer sees first a static figure drawn on the scrim and then the lighted neon figure representative of the inner self. The constellations are a new direction, incorporating the decorative stars that support building joists.
