Painting

Most artists, it seems, begin with painting, however far afield they may subsequently wander. The smell and texture of paint are alluring. Line has always been strong element of my work, and naturally led me from painting into drawing for many years. Early works presage the universal, symbolic figure developed in the mannequin drawings. “Confession” prefigures a return to a more developed human form. “Acceptance with Joy” is an illustration of a scene in the novel  Hinds’ Feet in High Places, by Hannah Hurnard.

I find it useful to reconsider this early work in the light of my current medium, mosaic.
